Mr P.S.Wainwright, who died at his home, 34 Stumperlowe Cresent Road, Fulwood at the age of 90, was the founder of the drapery and outfitting firm bearing his name at 170 - 174 The Moor, Sheffield. Born at Hatfield near Doncaster, Mr Wainwright was apprentice for seven years to a firm in Derby and then came to Sheffield where he was employed for several years by Cole Brothers. He started in business on his own account in 1871 at 25 Broad Street, Park and enlarged the business.
In 1885 he took over branch premises at 491-493 London Road, Heeley and later 30-34 London Road where he remained for some years. Over 20 years ago Mr Wainwright accquired the rpesent premises of the firm on The Moor. He retired from business 4 or 5 years ago and for the last few years has been greatly handicapped by increasing blindness. He had been ill for about a fortnight.
Mr Wainwright was a steward of the Old Norfolk Street Wesleyan Chapel, noww the Victoria Hall and was secretary of the Psalmordy Committee. His brother was the late Alderman Henry Wainwright, Mayor of Doncaster 1896-1897. His wife died about 3 years ago and he leaves two sons and a daughter.
